The future of household lighting will soon be the wide spread adoption and use of white energy efficientbulbs. Though the present market for finished white LED products is geared mainly towards enthusiasts and early-adopters, the efficiency and cost effectiveness of LED lighting systems will drive demand for more affordable LED lights. Opto-electronics is an exciting area and we predict, that in the near future, white LED lighting applications will be powerful and cheap enough to replace incandescent lighting for everyday use in our homes, in street lights, outdoor signs, and offices.
Advantages of LED Lights
The operational life of current white LED lamps is 100,000 hours. This is 11 years of continuous operation, or 22 years of 50% operation. The long operational life of an led lamp is a stark contrast to the average life of an incandescent bulb, which is approximately 5000 hours. If the lighting device needs to be embedded into a very inaccessible place, using LEDs would virtually eliminate the need for routine bulb replacement.
There is no comparison between the cost of LED lights vs. traditional incandescent options. With incandescent bulbs, the true cost of the bulb is the cost of replacement bulbs and the labor expense and time needed to replace them. These are significant factors, especially where there are a large number of installed bulbs. For office buildings and skyscrapers, maintenance costs to replace bulbs can be enormous. These issues can all be virtually eliminated with the LED option.
The key strength of LED lighting is reduced power consumption. When designed properly, an LED circuit will approach 80% efficiency, which means 80% of the electrical energy is converted to light energy. The remaining 20% is lost as heat energy. Compare that with incandescent bulbs which operate at about 20% efficiency (80% of the electrical energy is lost as heat). In real money terms, if a 100 Watt incandescent bulb is used for 1 year, with an electrical cost of 10 cents/kilowatt hour, $88 will be spent on electricity costs. Of the $88 expense, $70 will have been used to heat the room, not light the room. If an 80% efficient LED system had been used, the electricity cost would be $23 per year – there would be a cost savings of $65 on electricity during the year. Realistically the cost savings would be higher as most incandescent light bulbs blow out within a year and require replacements whereasbulbs can be used easily for a decade without burning out.
Our white LED lights currently come in packages which contain 36 or 48 LED lamps and can be adapted for use with any power supply or casing. The main limitation to the adoption of white LED lighting as a lighting standard is the current high cost of led bulbs. Although the cost keeps going down, LED light bulbs are still expensive. A single AC bulb (17 LED), replacing a 25 watt incandescent, will cost about $40. Although LED’s are expensive, the cost is recouped over time and in energy cost savings. Factor in that it is significantly cheaper to maintain led lights, the best value comes from commercial use where maintenance and replacement costs are expensive. Traffic lights and outdoor signs, for example, are being switched over to LED’s in many cities. Smaller arrays, such as those in flashlights, headlamps and small task lights are great for specialty and outdoor use. LED based automotive headlights are current being used in high end luxury cars.
It will be interesting to see what developments are coming for more residential applications of LED lights. LED lighting technology has been researched and developed for the past two decades and we are beginning to see practical applications from this work. There is already wide spread use of LED traffic signs and LED headlights where a premium is placed on a reliable light source that is cheaper and less labor intensive to maintain. We in the industry are certain that tomorrows LED lights will last longer and consume even less power than todays energy efficientbulbs. LED lighting will be used to replace virtually every type of light, bulb, and lamp that is currently in use.

LEDs are highly efficient. In traffic signal lights, a strong market for LEDs, a red traffic signal head that contains 196 LEDs draws 10W versus its incandescent counterpart that draws 150W. Various estimates of potential energy savings range from 82% to 93%. With the red signal operating about 50% of the day, the complete traffic signal unit is estimated to save 35-40%. It is estimated that replacing incandescent lamps in all of America’s some 260,000 traffic signals (red, green and yellow) could reduce energy consumption by nearly 2.5 billion kWh. In architectural applications, the greatest penetration of LEDs has been in exit signs, both new signs and retrofits. LED retrofit products, which come in various forms including light bars, panels and screw in LED lamps, typically draw 2-5W per sign, resulting in significant savings versus incandescent lamps with the bonus benefit of much longer life, which in turn reduces maintenance requirements. Some of these products are designed specifically for either on-face or two-face exit signs. Many new LED exit signs are also available, including edge-lit designs. LED products currently make up about 50% of the exit sign market. A study conducted by the Lighting Research Center in 1998 found that about 80% of new exit signs being sold in the U.S. utilize LEDs. Note that most retrofits are restricted to use in stencil-type signs versus panel-type signs.
Some LEDs are projected to produce a long service life of about 100,000 hours. For this reason LEDs are ideal for hard-to-reach/maintain fixtures such as exit sign lighting and, combined with its durability, pathway lighting. This service life can be affected by the application and environmental factors, including heat and if being overdriven by the power supply.
Range of Colors
LEDs are available in a range of colors (see above), including white light. White light can also be produced through color mixing of red, blue and green LEDs. In addition, through the innovative combination of various-colored LEDs, dramatic color-changing effects can be produced from a single fixture through dynamic activation of various sets of LEDs. Manufacturers such as Color Kinetics offer fixtures that employ this principle. Color Kinetics offers track, theatrical, underwater, outdoor and other fixtures utilizing variable-intensity LEDs that can provide more than 16.7 million colors, including white light. These fixtures can be individually controlled via a PC, DMX controller or proprietary controller to generate effects including fixed color, color washing, cross fading, random color changing, strobing and variable strobing.
Dr. Nadarajah Narendran of the Lighting Research Center is doing some exciting research on the use of colored LEDs in retail display lighting. Preliminary research suggests that using colored LED background lighting combined with spot lighting on merchandise may improve energy efficiency and reduce maintenance costs while catching the eye of the consumer in a fresh manner.

To be fair, I think LEDs have a ways to go yet, in terms of function, durability, and budget. There are some LED products you should consider over the next year, such as LED Christmas lights. And you might enjoy trying out a couple of bulbs, if you’re the energy-saving type. But is this going to save your money? Compact fluorescent lights, or CFLs, are so cheap that they’ll pay for themselves.
One thing, LED light bulbs are more efficient than incandescent or fluorescent lighting. The problem is that LEDs have very directed light. An incandescent light shines over an extensive area, while LED lights are very focused, so that the area they directly illuminate is very bright, while the further you go from the direct beam, the less light there is. For LED Christmas lights, that isn’t a problem; you just want some shining points of light, which LEDs do very efficiently. But an incandescent or CFL will do a much better job of brightening up your living room than an LED bulb in the same application. The light will be more evenly and generally spread, and with a warmer colour.
When it comes to halogen lights, they are only as efficient as incandescent lights, so the same efficiency considerations apply here. But since halogen lights are typically much more direct than incandescent bulbs, LED lights that are designed to replace halogen lights and work well for the direct light that halogen bulbs provide. But I have seen many consumer ratings of LED bulbs that report burnout within a few days of being switched on. Clearly there are some quality problems still to be worked on – yet another good reason for holding off a couple of years before switching wholesale to LEDs.
Whether LEDs will really live up to their long lasting billing remains to be seen – even the 35,000 hour ones would need to be on 24×7 for 4 years before they come close to reaching their advertised range. And LED lights do dim with age – so while a bulb might have a lifetime of 35,000 hours, it won’t emit its starting light level for the full 35,000 hours – the older it gets, the less light it will emit. LED lights do decline progressively in light intensity and therefore in efficiency, although they will still be more efficient than either CFLs or incandescent bulbs throughout their life.
The “colour temperature” of a light bulb, measured in ‘degrees Kelvin’, regulates human visual response to its light. You are probably comfortable with the yellowish glow of incandescent at around 2800 Kelvin (2800K), even though fluorescent lighting is closer to the natural daylight temperature of 6000K. Any LED with a temperature of 6000K or higher will seem bluish, and any LED with a colour temperature above 4000K will appear whiter than an incandescent bulb.
While homeowners are typically worried about how fluorescent or LED lights can make their rooms look blinding white instead of the comforting yellow glow provided by incandescent bulbs, you should remember that a little sacrifice in colour temperature will put a big dent in your electricity bill. Be a trendsetter, not a trend-follower – start converting your home lighting to true daylight colours, whether with CFL lights or LED light bulbs. You will be helping your family and friends to switch over; when they find out they won’t be the only ones with a slightly bluer light hue in their homes.
Whether you switch a few of your lights to LED lights now, or let the technology and reliability improve, you can count on the fact that LEDs will play an increasing role in lighting our houses in the years ahead. I personally think it makes sense to wait, except in certain special lighting situations where the direct, high-colour-temperature light of LEDs is what you’re after, and where money is no object. If you just want to save money – or to cut your energy use for environmental reasons – an equal amount of money spent on CFLs, or most other energy efficiency upgrades, will cut your energy bills and carbon footprint more than buying the LED lights now available.

The reality is thatLED lights will play a major role in the future of the residential lighting industry. This is because high-quality LED’s will last many thousands of hours – long enough to conclude that you will get “a lifetime of use out of each fitting”. They will also use considerably less energy than halogen downlights. However, currently there are many LED downight replacement options that are just not up to scratch. There are some very good, high quality products available, but they are currently not a cost effective solution for general lighting in the mainstream community.
A very effective way to use this technology is as an indicator or task based light source. The Different Colour Temperatures:
Generally there are three different Colour temperatures for Compact Fluorescent lamps. Colour Temperature is a measurement in Degrees Kelvin that indicates the hue of a specific type of light source.
Warm White is between 2700k and 3000k.
Cool White is between 4000k and 4200k
Daylight is between 4800k and 5000k

Compact Fluorescent Lamps are replacing more and more the less efficient incandescent lamps because they need less power and have a longer rated life. Some of you may now think that you don’t have the same advantages with these globes as you can’t dim them. This is wrong. New technology makes it possible to dim the CFLs.

You cannot dim all CFLs. If you want a dimmable lamp you need a purpose built CFL. Check the information on the packaging to be sure you buy the right globe.
Two different dimming technologies

If you don’t want to install a dimmer circuit you should get a switch dimmable light. You can dim the light by switching the on/off bottom. When you choose one of these two systems it is really important that you use dimmable CFLs especially when you install the lamp in a dimming circuit. So check the information on the packaging carefully that you can be sure to have the right lamp type.
Using a non-dimmable CFL
If you try to use a non dimming CFL in a dimming circuit it won’t work efficiently and the life of the lamp will be much shorter. You also won’t be able to claim the warranty back in most cases(depending on the manufacturers terms and conditions of their warranty).
Dimmable CFLs are three to five times more expensive than non dimming CFLs. This is because they require much more electronic circuitry. It also makes them bulkier then normal CLFs.
Sorts of dimmer
There are different sorts of dimmers on the market. For dimmable CFLs you should use leading edge electronic dimmers or trailing edge electronic dimmers. They will operate optimally with one of these technologies. You should buy the correct lamp for the type of dimmer you have.
Most of the lamps will also work with the wrong circuit but not efficiently. It could be noisy and the functionality could be limited. Another dimmer type is the rheostat dimmer. It is not compatible with any CFL.
Difference between dimmable CFLs and incandescent lamps
The biggest difference between incandescent and CFL dimmable lamps are that you can dim the incandescent down to zero and CFLs just down to 10-20 percent. The reason is that there must be an arc between the lamps cathodes and for this you need a certain amount of current.
