If you want to change the world, start by changing a few light bulbs. It is one of the best things you can do for the environment - and your budget.
In the 1880's, light bulbs had revolutionized the world. Today we all call them "lights", traditional incandescent bulbs are actually small heaters that produce a little light but they also waste a lot of energy making the heat.
Reasons to Switch to Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs:
The first reason is, replacing one regular light bulb with an approved compact fluorescent light bulb will save you $30 in energy costs over the life of the bulb.

The second and also very important reason is that Compact fluorescent light bulbs also generate 70 percent less heat, so they are safer to operate and can also reduce energy costs associated with cooling homes and offices.

The third and most important reason is that a Compact fluorescent light bulb use at least two-thirds less energy than a standard incandescent bulb to provide the same amount of light, and they also last up to 10 times longer.
Choosing the Right Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs:
To make sure you get the same amount of light when replacing standard bulbs with compact fluorescent light bulbs, check the lumen rating on the light you are replacing and purchase a compact fluorescent light bulb with the same lumen rating.
Wattage varies greatly between standard light bulbs and compact fluorescent light bulbs. Compact fluorescent light bulbs typically use about one-quarter of the wattage used by standard bulbs to produce the same amount of light. So to replace a traditional 60-watt bulb, look for a compact fluorescent light bulb that is about 15 watts.
Compact fluorescent light bulbs are available in many different sizes and shapes to fit in almost any fixture—from three-way lamps to dimmer switches—for both indoor and outdoor use. Compact fluorescent light bulbs also come in a variety of color temperatures, which helps determine the color and brightness of the light each bulb provides.
The Different Colour Temperatures:

Generally there are three different Colour temperatures for Compact Fluorescent lamps. Colour Temperature is a measurement in Degrees Kelvin that indicates the hue of a specific type of light source.

Warm White is between 2700k and 3000k.
Cool White is between 4000k and 4200k
Daylight is between 4800k and 5000k

To find the right lamp you need also an idea of which lamp base you need for your lights.
The following text will show you the different types of globes and describes what they are used for the most.
The Different types of lamp bases:

Edison Screw (ES, E27) (small: SES, E14)
Replacement low energy lamps are available with ES caps

Bayonet (B22, BC) (small: B14, SBC, B15)
The bayonet cap is not the safest of caps as the lamp holder has bare connection that you can touch if the bulb is removed.

High Voltage
GU10 lamps are often spot lights, used in recessed downlighters.
GU10 is one of the safest types of mains voltage lamp holder as all the electrical live parts are concealed even when the lamp is removed.

MR16 lamps are low voltage usually running at 12v. the pins are 5.3mm apart.
The most common use for this lamp cap is for spot lights, in recessed or decorative light fitting.
